The pair share Ford’s modular C2 platform, which supports the rigid but well-composed dynamics that are common to both models. That is a virtue that the Escape shares with its small car cousin – the highly-regarded Ford Focus. The fact Ford has sensibly stuck to relatively chunky tyres and small-ish 18” alloy wheels helps the ride a lot. The way the ST-Line reins in body movements on a country road or, say, driving over a speed bump, proves this SUV to be supple but disciplined. There is a ‘comfort’ tune used for the base model, simply badged Escape, and the top-end and leather-lined Vignale, whereas the mid-range ST-Line has a sports suspension of its own.Įven though the ST-Line is a bit stiffer than the other Escape variants, it strikes a pleasant balance of decent comfort in town with better body control than the base model or the Vignale. On the ride and handling front, Ford have struck the right balance with the Escape – especially in slightly sportier ST-Line guise. The plug-in hybrid will produce 167kW of power combined, and will utilise a 14.4kWh battery for an all-electric range of 56km on the WLTP cycle.īy contrast, the turbo petrol Escape ST-Line on test uses 8.6L/100km in either front-wheel-drive or AWD variations. Later on this year, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant will join the Escape range in ST-Line trim. In our ST-Line test car, the transmission hunted for gears too often, while shifts lacked the crispness of Mazda’s six-speed auto, or even Volkswagen’s seven-speed dual clutch unit. The auto gets the job done – but it isn’t Ford’s finest gearbox. Torque is sent to the wheels via an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission. We’d consider AWD essential: unfortunately, the affordable and well-specified $35,990 base model is front-wheel-drive only. This leads to torque steer in the dry – where the steering wheel tugs under power – and plenty of wheelspin in the wet. Unlike the CX-5, which requires all-wheel-drive if you choose the most powerful engine, the Ford Escape allows a choice of cheaper front-wheel-drive, or for $3,000, you can option in AWD traction.Īnd you should, because the Escape has so much torque that it frequently spins the front wheels if you avoid paying for AWD. That’s more than a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (160kW) or a Mazda CX-5 turbo petrol (170kW). Here, it makes 183kW of power and 387Nm of torque. The exclusive engine is a pretty powerful two-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder from Ford’s Ecoboost family of engines. What was once a vehicle that offered a choice of petrol and diesel engines in various sizes is now a one-choice affair. Like the best family Fords, it is comfortable enough for everyday school-run duties but it also offers up good steering and better handling than most rivals, meaning there’s also something here for keener drivers.įord Australia opted to reduce the complication of the Escape range compared to last time – no more so than in engine choice. That’s a good thing, because the Escape is smooth, supple, controlled and athletic to drive. In other words, it’s a product that Ford of Europe’s expert chassis engineers had their hands all over. Well, obviously – but what we mean by that is that the Escape drives in a way that is very familiar to those that have driven a Fiesta, Focus, Puma or Mondeo in recent years. In many ways, the Escape really is the Ford of medium SUVs. How the rest of the Escape package comes together will be key to this medium-sized SUV’s success in Australia.įord have also offered some sharp deals to get the new Escape moving, with driveaway deals at $35,990 for a front-drive base model and $38,490 for the front-wheel-drive, sportily-suspended ST-Line we have on test. Plenty of power is an appealing attribute – but it’s also a blunt instrument. Which is why the new, fourth-gen 2021 Ford Escape has gone all out, with a new platform, a radically new look outside, and a big punch sitting under the bonnet.Įvery grade of the new Escape packs a powerful 183kW turbo petrol engine that outpunches nearly every rival – including the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Volkswagen Tiguan 162TSI. In 2019, the Escape earned just two per cent of the market. Generally, the SUVs that sell well in Australia are worthy family cars, which is why the slow sales of the previous-generation Ford Escape were perplexing. Buyers flock to big-name achievers like the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5 and Volkswagen Tiguan while even the second tier of sellers in this class move thousands of cars onto Australian driveways each month. Cutting through in the hard-fought midsize SUV segment in Australia is really tough. The options you see may vary depending on the devices you have installed. Click the arrow to open the settings submenu, select the options that match your setup, then click Apply in the submenu. The most important thing to set here for the Blackmagic Media Source is the Configuration setting, to make sure that the bundle is set up to capture video from the right device and input port, using the same resolution and frame rate as the actual video feed. Once you've identified the type of Media Source you want the Media Bundle to handle, you can then set up any configuration properties offered by that type of source. In the Media Source property, select Blackmagic Media Source from the drop-down list: The Media Bundle is capable of playing video from any kind of media source the Engine supports, so you'll need to tell it that you want to get the video from your Blackmagic card. Some prior knowledge of these topics is recommended but not required. The Blackmagic Design components used in this guide are built on top of the Media Framework, and we'll use Blueprints to script the video capturing process at runtime. This page shows the steps in the Third Person Blueprint template, but the same steps will work equally well in any Project. Similarly, should one link in this network fail, the system can recognize and quickly respond by providing alternative routing paths for the communication to reach the end users. The cross-linked satellite architecture permits Iridium to operate with increased reliability due to the inherent meshed architecture involving both celestial and terrestrial infrastructure.Back-up Earth Terminals at other locations within the teleport network architecture can allow traffic to be grounded in multiple locations.Inter Satellite Link (ISL) traffic can be routed within the constellation until a spare is moved into place. The outage will be localized to the user or region. If a single satellite is temporarily unavailable due to technical issues or planned maintenance:.The LEO satellite constellation also makes it possible for changing and multiple view angles to the satellite so that line of sight issues will be temporary as long as you have a view of the sky. The large number of fast-moving satellites with multiple overlapping spot beams minimizes missed connections and dropped calls, since more than one satellite is usually visible from any place on Earth. This architecture is unique to Iridium, and it provides inherent advantages in performance and reliability over other mobile satellite services providers: And this all happens in fractions of seconds and is completely seamless to the end user. The call is relayed from satellite to satellite around the constellation without touching ground until it is downlinked at an Iridium gateway and subsequently patched into the public switched telecommunication network (PSTN) for transmission to its destination. Thus, the satellite network – much like a cellular network – hands off voice or data communications automatically from one spot beam to another within the satellite footprint, and from one satellite to the next as they pass overhead. The network is considered a meshed constellation of interconnected, cross-linked satellites so that each satellite “talks” with the other nearby satellites in front, behind and in adjacent orbits. All spot beams and satellite footprints overlap. The size of each spot beam is approximately 250 miles in diameter and the satellite’s full 48-beam footprint is approximately 2,800 miles in diameter. It is a function of latitude/longitude and beam coverage, but it typically takes about ten minutes for a satellite to cross the sky from horizon to horizon.Įach satellite can project 48 spot beams on the Earth’s surface. The low-flying satellites travel at approximately 17,000 miles per hour, completing an orbit of the Earth in about 100 minutes. There are 11 satellites in each of six orbital planes and their orbits “crisscross” roughly over the north and south poles. The satellites operate in near-circular low-Earth orbits (LEO) about 780 km (483 miles) above the Earth’s surface. Iridium’s constellation consists of 66 cross-linked operational satellites, plus six in-orbit spares. The satellites are the towers, orbiting the Earth and handing off calls to each other as they pass overhead. Iridium’s satellite network functions in much the same way. As you move from one cell to another, the system automatically hands off your call seamlessly to the next tower. Most of us are familiar with the way mobile phone networks work, with multiple interconnected cellular towers. You could wear it to bed and then the next day too…its that comfortable. I’ve been searching for the perfect base layers for years now. The 1st SS Panzer Division was reinforced by the Füsilier Bataillon 272 of the 272nd Infantry Division and the 101st SS Heavy Panzer Battalion an independent Tiger detachment. The divisions were supported by the artillery of the I SS Panzer Corps, recently reinforced by the 8th Nebelwerfer Brigade. The division had a Sturmgeschütz III battalion and its Panzerjäger battalion had a company of Jagdpanzer IV tank destroyers. The 1st SS Panzer Division had its normal panzer regiment with two panzer battalions, one with Panthers, the other with Panzer IVs and two infantry regiments comprising six battalions, one of which was mounted on half-tracks. the XLVII Panzer Corps and the II SS Panzer Corps were ordered to send Kampfgruppen (battlegroups) across the Orne. Late on 19 July, a counter-attack against the gains made during Goodwood was delayed until the 116th Panzer Division had arrived, which had been ordered to move by road regardless of loss. The Germans were expecting further attacks on Verrières Ridge and sent reinforcements. Twelve field regiments had 264 field guns, comprising a hundred and ninety-two 25-pounder gun-howitzers and ninety-six 105 mm howitzers, nine medium regiments with a hundred and forty-four 5.5-inch guns, two heavy regiments with sixteen 155 mm guns and sixteen 7.2-inch howitzers and a heavy anti-aircraft regiment with twenty-four 3.7-inch anti-aircraft guns in use as ground artillery, a total of 488 guns. Ģ5-pounder field guns in action during an attack on Tilly-sur-Seulles, 17 June 1944.Īrtillery support was to be provided by the divisional artilleries of the participating divisions, the 2nd Canadian Army Group Royal Artillery, the 8th Army Group Royal Artillery (8th AGRA) and 83 Group RAF. In phase III, the 7th Armoured Division was to capture Point 122 and exploit towards Cintheaux and in phase IV the Guards Armoured Division was required to capture woods to the east of Garciers-Secqueville as the 3rd Canadian Division occupied La Hogue. Phase II, to begin at H+2½ hours, required the divisions to press on and capture Fontenay-le-Marmion, Rocquancourt and Carciers-Sequeville. Phase I of the plan required the 2nd and 3rd Canadian divisions to capture May-sur-Orne, Verrières and Tilly-la-Campagne. The infantry brigades would have the support of the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade. The 3rd Canadian Division, on the east side of the road, was to capture Tilly-la-Campagne with the 9th Canadian Infantry Brigade followed by Garciers-Secqueville. The 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade, on the left flank, would take Verrières and then Rocquincourt. The 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade, on the right flank, would then capture May-sur-Orne and Fontenay-le-Marmion. The attack was to take place in four stages the 2nd Canadian Division would attack on the west side of the Caen–Falaise road with the 4th and 5th Canadian Infantry brigades after the 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade had cleared the start line by retaking the Beauvoir and Troteval farms and capturing Saint-Martin-de-Fontenay. Attempts to take the ridge during Goodwood had been thwarted by the I SS Panzer Corps (General Sepp Dietrich). About 8 km (5.0 mi) south of Caen, Verrières Ridge blocked a direct advance by Allied forces on Falaise. The districts of Caen north of the Orne were captured during Operation Charnwood (8–9 July 1944) and those south of the Orne had been captured on July 19, during Operation Goodwood, in Operation Atlantic by the II Canadian Corps (Lieutenant-General Guy Simonds) at a cost of 1,349 casualties. The German defence of the ridge contained the offensive on the first day and inflicted many casualties on the Canadians. Operation Spring was intended to capture Verrières Ridge and the villages on the south slope of the ridge. The plan was intended to create pressure on the German forces operating on the British and Canadian front simultaneous with Operation Cobra, an American offensive. Operation Spring (July 25–27, 1944) was an offensive operation of the Second World War conducted by II Canadian Corps during the Normandy campaign in 1944. |
